Dinoflagellate cysts production, excystment and transport in the upwelling off Cape Blanc (NW Africa)

چکیده
To extend the understanding of dinoflagellate cysts production, excystment and vertical/lateral transport in water column, we compared upper cyst export production with associations concentrations subsurface nepheloid layer, bottom layer deeper column during active upwelling off Cape Blanc (NW Africa) August 2020. Export was collected by two drifting trap surveys; DTS1 an cell for 4 days DTS2 offshore filament 2 days. Subsurface, layers waters were sampled in-situ pumps along transects perpendicular to shelf break. During DTS1, light limitation hampered phytoplankton which might have influenced negatively due up- downward movement masses. Cyst increased at rim cell. For DTS2, up 3 times lower than that DTS1. Echinidinium delicatum had highest relative absolute abundances upwelling, zonneveldiae Bitectatodinium spongium filament, Impagidinium spp. Gymnodinium microreticulatum/nolleri most distal stations. Comparison without contents showed majority hatched before reaching displayed a dormancy period less 6 About 5% living reached and/or ocean floor. Living transported filament. In case ships exchange ballast studied region, they will take laterally cysts. Upon release port arrival, these potential become “invader species” can threaten economy health. Lateral observed (800 - 1200m depth) maximal extension about 130km Therefore, sediments region contain mixture regionally locally produced This insight contributes improvement environmental reconstructions blanc system based on downcore associations.

Methane emissions from the upwelling area off Mauritania (NW Africa)
Coastal upwelling regions have been identified as sites of enhanced CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. The coastal upwelling area off Mauritania (NW Africa) is one of the most biologically productive regions of the world’s ocean but its CH4 emissions have not been quantified so far. More than 1000 measurements of atmospheric and dissolved CH4 in the surface layer in the upwelling area off Maurita...
متن کاملCephalopod paralarvae and upwelling conditions off Galician waters (NW Spain)
A total of 103 cephalopod paralarvae were sampled during June 1995 in Galician waters (NW Spain). Samples were taken with Bongo nets of 300 and 500 μm mesh size at 48 sampling stations along 10 transverse transects ranging from 80 to 600 m water depth. Paralarvae of loliginid squid were most abundant (40%). The Rhynchoteuthion paralarvae of ommastrephid squid accounted for 25%, whereas sepiolid...
متن کاملOff-shelf fluxes of labile materials by an upwelling filament in the NW Iberian Upwelling System
Daily changes in the concentrations of carbon and nitrogen species were monitored during the course of a Lagrangian drifter experiment in a recurrent upwelling filament south of Cape Finisterre (NW Iberian Upwelling System). A drifting buoy released at the southern edge of the upwelling centre generated by the Cape moved 60km southwestwards from 3 to 7 August 1998. Organic matter in the 50m dee...
متن کاملBiological N2 Fixation in the Upwelling Region off NW Iberia: Magnitude, Relevance, and Players
The classical paradigm about marine N2 fixation establishes that this process is mainly constrained to nitrogen-poor tropical and subtropical regions, and sustained by the colonial cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. and diatom-diazotroph symbiosis. However, the application of molecular techniques allowed determining a high phylogenic diversity and wide distribution of marine diazotrophs, which e...
متن کاملRapid 20th-century increase in coastal upwelling off northwest Africa.
Near-shore waters along the northwest African margin are characterized by coastal upwelling and represent one of the world's major upwelling regions. Sea surface temperature (SST) records from Moroccan sediment cores, extending back 2500 years, reveal anomalous and unprecedented cooling during the 20th century, which is consistent with increased upwelling. Upwelling-driven SSTs also vary out of...
